He knew what he had done wrong the first time around, and he saw what Intuit had done wrong with TurboTax, so he was able to avoid a lot of design mistakes in TaxAct. The founder of TaxAct sold his previous tax software company to Intuit and left as soon as his noncompete agreement expired. I think TaxAct is the best-designed consumer desktop tax program. The software is also more lightweight than TurboTax. The interview is not as complete, which actually makes the software less annoying if you don't like interviews. However, a lot of Bogleheads who can use H&R Block like it better than TurboTax. For example, there are a lot of Bogleheads who cannot use H&R Block because it doesn't support Form 1116 Schedule B. H&R Block does not support as many tax situations as TurboTax. It appears to have much higher market share among Bogleheads than in the overall market. There are threads on H&R Block every tax season. I'd like to try, or at least watch someone try, the download version. Unfortunately, all the reviews I've found online are just for the web version. I've always used TurboTax but I'd be open to switching.
